Types Of Kitchen Layouts
Although the point of custom kitchens is that they’re designed for your space, all kitchens follow 1 of 6 types. As remodel professionals in Pensacola, FL, Bilco Builders can of course adjust these to suit your exact needs.
One Wall Kitchens
A one-wall kitchen is exactly what it sounds like: everything is against one wall. Your refrigerator, sink, worktops, and stove are built in a line, perhaps with cabinets up top to make it more space-efficient.
As you can imagine, the work triangle doesn’t fit here because everything is in a straight line. However, you can make it more efficient by putting the refrigerator on one side, the stove in the middle, and the sink on the other end.
One-wall kitchens are best for small spaces or for open-plan houses. They’re designed to maximize the available space without compromising storage or efficiency.
Galley Kitchen
Galley kitchens are one of the most common designs in small-medium homes. Named after the food-preparation area on a shop, galley kitchens feature 2 rows of cabinets facing each other.
They provide more storage and food preparation space and follow the work triangle principle. It’s best to fit the stove and refrigerator on one wall and the sink on the other in the middle. This layout provides the most efficiency in a small space.
You have plenty of options for custom kitchens in a galley layout. They’re uncomplicated to install, as you don’t need corner cupboards or custom worktops fitted.
L-Shaped Kitchens
L-shaped kitchens are pretty self-explanatory. They feature worktops across 2 walls at a right angle, making them ideal for open-plan spaces with the kitchen in one corner.
They feature corner cupboards, meaning you lose out on a small amount of storage space. But, you still have plenty of options for custom kitchens, and your remodel professionals can explain the best way to use the space.
Using a corner in this way can be helpful in awkward-shaped rooms. Plus, opening up the room in this way means you can include a breakfast table or eating area if you’d like.
U-Kitchens
U-shaped kitchens build on the principles of the L-shaped kitchen. They include cabinets on 3 walls in a U-shape, providing plenty of storage and preparation area. To balance this out, it’s better to not include top-level cabinets, as this can make it feel enclosed.
Designing custom kitchens in this shape allows for the most efficient use of the work triangle. Locating one area on each side is efficient and makes the most use of the space.
U-shaped kitchens are suitable for larger areas that still aren’t big enough for an island. Be sure to discuss with your contractor your options for personalizing the space, such as bright tiles or open shelving.
Peninsula Kitchen
Peninsula kitchens are a mix between U-shaped and island kitchens. Rather than a separate island, part of a cabinet juts out into the room. This creates a natural break in open-plan spaces and provides a dining area.
The design is suitable for rooms that are too small for an island but are open-plan, or need some kind of natural break between the kitchen and other areas.
Island Kitchen
Island kitchens are perfect for large, open-plan areas. They feature a separate island for cleaning or preparing food. The island also helps break up open spaces and is ideal for dining.
Islands also direct the flow of traffic through the kitchen and make great social points in the home. You have plenty of options for the work triangle depending on what makes sense in your space.
There are few downsides to this layout. Perhaps the main one is that islands can take up a lot of space and may look too large in some kitchens.
